My Work as a Sex Therapist
I am an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and own a private practice where I work primarily on issues related to sexuality with my clients. Being an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist means that, in addition to my licensure as a clinical mental health therapist, I received an additional certification which required another 150 hours in education and 50 hours of supervision.
Some might ask, why would you need so many hours of extra training just to help people with sexuality? Our culture has historically minimized and over simplified sexuality, which has lead to so much unnecessary pain, frustration, and harm to people who could have avoided such discomfort if they’d only had sufficient accurate information.
Truth is, we are complex beings – where our emotional, physical, relational, spiritual and sexual parts of ourself all intersect and overlap. Certified Sex Therapists acquire the training needed to assess and address whatever may be going on with a person or relationship; whether in the therapy office or by collaborating with another professional (e.g. medical provider).
